Empathy: the value that connects us
Empathy is an essential quality for chaplains, because it allows us to connect to others on an emotional level. This means that we are able to understand and feel the pain and suffering of others, so that they can offer them effective emotional and spiritual support. By being empathetic, we show others that we are there for them, that we understand them and that we are ready to accompany them in their journey.
However, empathy does not only mean feeling the pain of others. It also means being able to put yourself in the place of the other person, to see things from his point of view and to feel what she feels. This requires patience, attention and openness.
In the end, empathy allows us to better understand and better serve the people we accompany, offering loving and attentive support that can help others find peace and emotional and spiritual well-being.
